Funerals

The loss of a loved one is always a sad experience and we know that there is much to do and organise. We aim to make funerals as helpful and supportive as possible.

Funerals can be conducted in church, at the crematorium, or at the cemetery or there can be a combination of church and crematorium/cemetery. A church funeral allows a little more time for the service than either the crematorium or cemetery. Many people choose to use the church for the main part of the service, then the crematorium or cemetery for the final committal. A good funeral service will enable relatives and friends to begin their mourning, but will also express praise and thanksgiving for the life of the deceased. Our funeral services always include the Christian hope of resurrection life beyond death.

The first step in organising a funeral is usually to contact your local funeral director. The funeral director  will take care of all details for you, including contacting the Vicar, and will advise you of costs.

The Vicar will always meet with the family or next of kin before a funeral to offer support and to discuss the service. Follow-up support is available from the parish, as required.

You may find the following links helpful when planning a funeral:

Christ Church has a Garden of Remembrance for the interment of ashes. The Garden is on the South side of the Church, to the right of the main door. If you wish to inter ashes in the Garden, please contact your Funeral Director in the first instance. More information may be found here.

We also have a Book of Remembrance (this link downloads a file).
